Lee Garrett 'I Can'T Break The Habit' OGhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/455935-lee-garrett-i-cant-break-the-habit-og/ What's the status on this one now on the Northern Soul front ?

Is it big a second time around or was the eVilBay's Carolina Soul last September auction another one of these mental 'one off' over the roof finishing auction ?

Northern Tunes In Strange Placeshttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/75461-northern-tunes-in-strange-places/In a new Pub enjoying a Pint nattering to her in doors when low and behold mixed into the piped background music came out the Valentines "Breakaway".

Mixed in between other MOR fodder Abba, George Benson etc i thought this was the programmer digging a bit too deep! Ok Jackie Wilson, Erma Franklin but Valentines? a wonderful tune in its own right, but certainly obscure!!

Set me thinking of other instances i could recall of Obscure Northern in places where you wouldnt least expect.

So here's two more to get you started.

Valentino's "Sweeter than the day before" in a "Shells" Brandenton, Florida. (OK a minor USA hit in the 60's but.....)

Terry Callier "Look at me Now" on a Cruise ship in Bahamas.

There is a VRBO advert with  a good sounding track being played on a deck.  Is this an actual track or a made up thing for the advert. I think this link works on the first click only.

if the link doesn’t work search YouTube for ‘relax dance one key’

Holy Grail- 45- "angel Baby" - Garland Green - Mca -Australian Issuehttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/335407-holy-grail-45-angel-baby-garland-green-mca-australian-issue/-post-23350-0-22393800-1431447987_thumb.j

Only three known copys exsist ! Now here's the heads up on it...

I've had my copy for around twenty year always knew it was something special and a thing of beauty besides being a choice soul record. So recently and over the past year or so posted photo on FB always liked by some of the serious collectors/dj's alike and had quite a few snapping at my heals to sell them it,imeadiatly dismissed not for sale !

Now then just this week i decided to investigate the said 45.

So now it was up to me to track down aussie  collector Frank Driscoll and see what else i can uncover, tuck me 2 mins in all and i was chatting.....

Me - Hi Frank,Just wondering about the heads up on the Garland Green - Angel Baby 45, Just read up Anoraks Corner Exactly how rare is it. Sorry about poor pic quality just a snap with the phone can scan it at a later date if require.
Thanks in advance

Frank - It's a rare record, yours is only the third copy I know of 100% to exist, I'm sure there are more but not too many. It's very hard to put a value on though, get a couple of Aussie label collectors after it and it could fly. It was pressed in Clayton, a Melbourne suburb, by Astor. The thing with Aussie releases is a lot of them are dog rare, it wasn't a country where soul was either played or bought much from what I can work out anyway. Rumour has it that every Friday afternoon the plastic recyclers would call into Astor and clear the shelves of dead stock which was of course melted down! I've been collecting Aussie 45's since 1980 and there are still quite a few I know were released but have never seen so there are plenty of very rare releases.

Me - Wow mate that story sounds a bit Frank Wilson to me its almost identical.

So Soulfolk history in the making with this very rare 45 and with only three copys known too exsist 100%, Be intresting to see what you think and what its really worth never mind top dealers offering peanuts or guessing what it will sell for, i put it to you what would YOU be prepered to offer too own this Holy grail "Angel"

Stevie (Mantis)

In all honesty how many of you even knew it exsisted ?

The one that got awayhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/455887-the-one-that-got-away/ What’s the one record you spent a long time trying to snag a copy but for what ever reason didn’t manage it.

for me it’s Thomas Bailey “just won’t move” on king

i was even watching a copy on eBay that went really cheap but forgot to bid.  Other than that copy I hardly ever saw it.

there are lots of others but they were already expensive and had lots of demand so always went over what I was willing to pay.

this isn’t a topic of the good and bad of a record or the value, just a bit of mindless fun of what would stop you in your tracks?

John Westley Moffett = Johnny Wesley ?https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/426219-john-westley-moffett-johnny-wesley/ (Hello to you all / my first post here)

I did some research regarding this singer John Westley Moffett aka

-Johnny Moffett on Canterbury (writing credits: J. Moffett)

http://www.45cat.com/record/c518

-John Westly on Renfro (writing credits: James Mofett)

-John Westly on Crafmaster Records, Inc.

https://www.popsike.com/RARE-Northern-Deep-JOHN-WESTLY-on-RENFRO/330395543866.html

https://www.raresoulman.co.uk/230106-keep-loving-you-call-on-me.html

-John Westley (writing credits: John Westley-Moffett)

http://www.45cat.com/record/nc795325us

-John Wesley on Vivid - no "T" (writing credits: John Wesley) ; produced by LEE YOUNG

http://www.45cat.com/record/nc927275us

copyright credits confirm Wesley = Moffett on that one: https://books.google.fr/books?id=szQhAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA735&lpg=PA735&dq="You're+Gonna+Miss+Me"+wesley+copyright&source=bl&ots=MW3NQ8cvVh&sig=ACfU3U2tgu441Yo17Bky1_QUJmDJPQynnw&hl=fr&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjA5I2c6Kz1AhVMUxoKHbwcCQUQ6AF6BAgCEAM#v=onepage&q="You're Gonna Miss Me" wesley copyright&f=false

BMI gather all his writing credits under John Westley Moffett : https://repertoire.bmi.com/Search/Catalog?num=v0RixSBqgEeGRXdF%2bIsISQ%3d%3d&cae=UsqupUYhm07jssJ6owMYRg%3d%3d&partType=WriterList&search={"Main_Search_Text"%3A"I Found Joy"%2C"Sub_Search_Text"%3Anull%2C"Main_Search"%3A"Title"%2C"Sub_Search"%3Anull%2C"Search_Type"%3A"all"%2C"View_Count"%3A100%2C"Page_Number"%3A0%2C"Part_Type"%3Anull%2C"Part_Id"%3Anull%2C"Part_Id_Sub"%3Anull%2C"Part_Name"%3Anull%2C"Part_Cae"%3Anull%2C"Original_Search"%3Anull%2C"DisclaimerViewed"%3Anull}&resetPageNumber=True&partIdSub=YO0HedHMatLb45JzS23DVw%3d%3d

---Deep soulful voice to my ears---

Then we have two other records :

-Johnny Wesley on Melic (writing credits: J. Livingston, H. Symes, Al Neiberg) ; produced by LEE YOUNG

http://www.45cat.com/record/4170

-John Wesley on Melic (writing credit on B-side : ERNIE SHELBY) ; produced by LEE YOUNG

http://www.45cat.com/record/nc487704us

---Higher pitch soulful voice to my ears---

And finally we have two tracks on Quincy Jones' soundtracks:

- Johnny Wesley "I Needs To Be Bee'd With" written by ERNIE SHELBY (Cactus Flowers score 1969)

- John Wesley "Celebration" (The Split score 1968)

---Higher pitch soulful voice to my ears--

All those songs are available on YT ; I think that the Lee Young credit is a coincidence and that the Melic / Quincy Jones singer IS NOT J.W. Moffett.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Soul Inc - What Goes Up Must Come Down - Emblemhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/196708-soul-inc-what-goes-up-must-come-down-emblem/A few questions.

Not being a scene regular

I Would like to know a bit about the history of the 45, where and when it was played on the Soul scene.

I heard it a little while back on one of Pete Smiths podcasts and just thought it was so lovley ............... the whole podcast was outstanding Pete btw (the blue eyed soul one)

I realise this is a tough / rare 45, so how much for a decent copy ?

Has it had its day on the scene, or is it still one that is still waiting for its five mins of fame ?

Also - is this the same band that recorded the huge "my proposal"

Any info on the band would be nice.

Many thanks everyone as usual !

Arthur Prysock recent If i was a boy releasehttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/448877-arthur-prysock-recent-if-i-was-a-boy-release/ A 7"  single which has been recently released On a USA Audio Disc called If i was a boy by Arthur Prysock and flew out within hours.

But the thing is to my ears this is The Allan Scott album track "You were a girl when i needed a Woman" from the 'I needed a Woman' LP (Tower USA) '69

which i used to play out back in the day. So was this just a Cover Up played here in the UK as Arthur Prysock that some one had done in the States?

It has been quoted  as a very rare acetate on the nett, Thoughts anyone? can't be Arthur Prysock surely.

Charles Perry / Berry - One Room Country Shackhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/455602-charles-perry-berry-one-room-country-shack/ Back in the mid 80s as a young Mod lad in North Wales I used to attend local events in North Wales run by "North Wales Soul Club"

Great days - my great friend Rich Buckley and I cut out teenage Soulful teeth at these local North Wales nights.

There were a couple of different venues, one being a venue called TTs Nightclub which was part of the ancient Abergele Castle buildings, really different.

The events were organised (I Think) by Mark Speakman and, Chico, Mark Speakman, Chico, Phil Blacknell and Chris Fenny DJing mainly with the odd guest.

So a favourite of mine that used to get played at the venue was "one room country shack" which was introduced as Charles Perry or Charles Berry

It was a great up tempo RnB Soul version, I loved it,

So 40 years have passed and I have searched for "one room country shack" and have never ever been able to find out who or what it was.

I imagine it was a cover up played off a studio acetate or something.

My question is - Who actually played this record and who was it by ?

Was it a one off studio acetate ?

Does anyone remember this record being played?

I  never heard it played anywhere else.

Anyone have any clues ?

I would love to know what it was and who played it.

Help With Identifying A Trackhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/455552-help-with-identifying-a-track/ A mate asked me about a record. He only had the very beginning on a tape. The thing is I know it! I've forgotten what it is though? Female mid-tempo Northern Soul. Pretty sure it was on a Kent LP years ago too?

Here's the first lines...

"Boy I love you and you know it, I've tried so very hard to show it, everything I did, I did to make you smile, you've got me acting like a little child. Though you want her love, you can't forget my love..."

Please put him...and me out of our misery!

I know Trev, I like that "somebody pressed the record button too late" it smacks of those cock ups that make record collecting so interesting. Love the Soul Supply guys, their LP's were essential, but there have been a few instances where the wrong track was laid next to the wrong title, Soul Incorporated on Emblem (Yellow and shield design) for instance on the 'Untouchables' LP... maybe that’s for another thread.

Yes, I spotted that Soul Incorporated track on the 'Untouchables' LP, it was the other version by 'The Charms Unlimited' on the red/white Emblem label wasn't it Mal?

I think they were the same group, just 2 different recordings of that tune.

New Aussie 45s, and a Charts (Wand) question?https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/455422-new-aussie-45s-and-a-charts-wand-question/ Had some very nice Aussie 45s through this week, plus a big stash of orig sleeves, all in minty condition... 🙂

The Charts, dead hard on Aussie Sceptre, taken me years to get a demo of this, but I noticed immediately, that the 45 I had, differed from the aussie Demo on Discogs, on Discogs, 'Desiree' is the push side with demo sticker and no release Stamp, but on my copy  'Fell In Love With You Baby' is the demo'd side, anybody know which was the official A side on this release? (popped all the scans below)

Shelley Fabares - Lost Summer Love, I think the original version of Lorraine Silver, came out on Aussie Philips in 1965, originally released on Vee-Jay Records Stateside and was meant to have come out on PYE International over here, but it never came out, so as far as I know, US and Aus only on this one. Anybody know if it came out any where else?   A good pop record, dare I say 'Northern' lol

The Creations on Mel-O-Dy and Unique Blendhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/455052-the-creations-on-mel-o-dy-and-unique-blend/ Years ago Bob Abrahamian told me that The Creations from Toledo, who recorded one single for Motown's Mel-o-dy label, evolved into Eastbound's Unique Blend, but the information that I can find about members of either group is contradictory. I'm hoping that someone can help me with the lineups of both groups.

The lineup that I have for The Creations is Tom Lipkins, Charles Holman, Robert Williams, Juan Wingard, and Michael Farland.

The lineup for Unique Blend on Discogs that appears to be taken from an Ace CD is Howard Kinnibrew, Milton Overton, and Lorenzo Smith. Some other sources include Charles Holman in the lineup, and he does have writing credits on 3/4 of their released recordings.

The link between the two groups appears to be Charles Holman. I have a photo of the Creations, and comparing it to the photo I can find online of Unique Blend, I'm positive that the two members in the Creations picture (bottom row, left-to-right) are the same people in the Unique Blend picture (center and right) - I also see similarities with the Creations member on the top left and the Unique Blend member on the left, but I'm not 100% that it's the same person. Anyway, is there anyone out there that has actually talked to either group and confirm the lineups?

John and the Wierdest - Can't Get Over These Memorieshttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/454923-john-and-the-wierdest-cant-get-over-these-memories/ Hi everybody,  There are two intros, as far as I can tell,  to John and the Wierdest, one with a Piano lead in, the other, just short drum roll and in.

What do folks know about these two different intros, is one a bootleg version, there was a good one (Bootleg) in the 9ts/early 2000's, which was dark brown to the light, or did it get originally realeased like this, was this a legit Radio edit?

Scan below shows running time 2.04, don't have another scan to compare to this one....

Any ideas?

King Superfly on Manships Auctionhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/454869-king-superfly-on-manships-auction/ Given the fact this record is the same as Bobby king on Lunar then it would be reasonable to think King Superfly is just a play on Bobby's surname to negate contractual issues. Where is the provenance this has anything to do with Rudy Love. I stand to be corrected as my time spent at school was limited.

Individuals - May I (Fresh)https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/454435-individuals-may-i-fresh/ Hi all,

Does anyone know the story to this record and what it goes for?

https://www.discogs.com/release/8786358-Individuals-May-I-

info on Discogs is scant and other than the very occasional request for it (post 5 years ago) I don't hear/read much about it on here or even on playlists etc.

Kent Anniversary counterfeits or are they?https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/454555-kent-anniversary-counterfeits-or-are-they/ Looking on Ebay to purchase Kent anniversary singles and theres one guy on there with quite a few to sell.He advertises them as brand new which is a red flag in itself and calls them first pressings,

They are cheaper than I would expect to pay but far dearer than they should be if counterfeits.

If they are fakes then how the hell do they get away with it.

Shouldn't Kent (Ady Crosdale) be taking action or indeed Ebay?

Desperately seeking artist/songhttps://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/454440-desperately-seeking-artistsong/ Hi all, really appreciate help finding artist and song whose 1st line reads “going to a castle in the sky, you and I.” I’ve just come across it again after many years being posted by the Bristol NS guys and girls on utube. They don’t unfortunately post a track list. Any help would be gratefully welcomed and end my misery if not the search for this little belter! Thanks for listening x
