How to sign up for Soul Source?

To be able to enjoy all of the features, you will need to sign up for a Soul Source member account.

Registration is quick easy and only takes a moment to complete.

To sign up, click the "Sign Up" link at the top of any page. You can then provide your details to complete the registration process.

Please note YOU MUST fill in 'Real Name (Mods only can view)' correctly for approval eg a FULL REAL FULL NAME/ID!

Once signed up you must then verify your email address by clicking the link in the site email that we will send you.

You will then receive a confirmation of your membership as an email.

If the email doesn't show please check your spam folders and then if no joy then please use the 'contact us' link (it's at the bottom of every page) to let us know you are having problems.

How do I login to Soul Source?

Once you have signed up for an account, you can log in by pressing the "Sign In" button at the top of any page.

From here, you should enter your username or email address, and the password you used when you registered. If you tick the "Remember Me" box you will not have to sign in when you visit the community in future. This ability can be very useful, but should not be used if other people have access to your computer or if you are using a public computer.

You may also be able to hide your username from the online list by checking the "Sign in anonymously" box. Administrators will still be able to see you online if you do so, however other members will not be able to.

When you are ready, click Sign In.
Once logged in, you should be taken back to whatever page you were previously viewing.

You may also see additional log in options such as Twitter or Facebook Connect. If these features are available and you would prefer to use one of these options to log in, click on the appropriate button and follow the on-screen instructions.

Logging Out
To log out click the "Sign Out" link at the top of the screen from any page.

How do I get to and use my Profile?

Profiles are a main part of Soul Source experience. All members have a profile that can be viewed by all other member and can be customised to your liking. All members content and other important information relating to the member can be viewed here. Along with links for pms etc

How to get to your profile

To edit your profile information

Just select the "Edit Profile" button one quarter top right as shown below

Once clicked you will then be presented with the edit profile screen. From here you will be able edit your Birthday, Enable and disable status updates on your profile, and change your "About me" information.

In addition to this information, you will see custom profile fields.

Changing your cover photo

You can change your own cover photo by selecting the "Cover Photo" option in the top right.

Changing your profile photo

Profile photos are shown on your profile, and throughout the site as your 'avatar' within posts and other Soul Source content. You can add a photo by upload or from another URL on the internet, then resize and position this as appropriate.

Viewing content

From any members profile, you can see all the activity of that member by selecting the "See My Activity" button in the top right of the profile. This will then present you with a filterable list of content that the member has posted on Soul Source.

Profile Privacy

You can choose not to show your recent profile visitors on the page by disabling that block from being shown to other users by clicking the link provided for that purpose within the "Recent Profile Visitors" block on the left of your profile.

You may also choose to disable the ability for users to be able to follow you. This can be achieved by changing the options within the followers block, as per image below.

The account settings are accessed via the same drop down menu as per the Profile

Just hit your member name via the top right hand corner of every page and then select "Account Settings" link

Overview

On the overview page you will see the accounts you are connected to such as facebook, google+ and more, along with links to the other settings in which you can access from this page. You will also notice various tabs where you can change your email address, password, display name and any linked accounts.

Linking accounts

When clicking to link an account on any of the available you will be given the relevant options that you can select relating to this. For example, below you will see the Facebook settings which allow you to syncronise various elements of your site and facebook.

Notification Settings

Selecting notification settings on in the "Other Settings" section of the overview page will present you with all the options for how notifications are create for you by default when creating or replying to content, along with other events on the site.

In the top section of this page you will see something similar to the below. First of all you will notice on the right the "Browser notifications enabled" sign. This means that if your browser allows desktop notifications, it will notify you even when you are not active on that page.

On the left you will see a series of options which will allow you to set the automatic notification options relevant to your account. So for example you may want to be automatically set as following an item of content and receive notifications for that followed content whenever you reply to an item. From here you can set this up.

In the botton half of the page, you can then set up the notification types for each notifiable item on the site. So you may wish to set up notifications and emails for when someone sends you a message on the site, however you may only want to get a notification in the notification list for someone who sets to follow you.

Ignored Users

You can get to the Ignored users list by clicking this item in the "Other Settings" section of the overview page. Ignored users is a facility on your site where you can (depending on permissions) set a member to ignored in order to not see any content from that member. So if they post within a topic and you are ignoring them, you will not see that ignored content. This can be useful for filtering out people who you have no interest in reading the content of. To do this you would simply add their name into the box provided and add them to the list.

Lost or Forgotten Password - How do I get a new one?

If you have forgotten your password, you can click the "I've forgotten my password" link on the sign in page below the password box. This will take you to a page where you can enter your username or email address, and we will then email you a link for you to reset your password.

Note that if you locked your account by typing in the wrong password too many times, you will still need to unlock your account before you can use your new password.

Please contact the site team for assistance if you encounter trouble with a locked account or password recovery.

The event guide is set up to offer an dynamic member led guide to soul music events

You can get to it via the calendar icon at the top of every page in desktop, tablet and phone views and via the main menu/hamburger menu in the other views

1. All events - all events are listed (less radio shows which are part of the stand alone radio guide)

2. Allnighters - Allnighter events ( for ease an allnighter is classed as a event that finished after 4am)

4. Soul Nights - Soul Night Events

5. Alldayers - All day type events

6. Live acts - Soul Music Artists appearing live

7. Misc events - Non-music events such as record fairs etc

8. Soul Radio - The Soul Source Online Radio guide - All Radio shows and regular podcasts

All event types are colour coded.

To add an event can either use the site wide 'add' link (at the top of every page) or the 'create event' button (that shows on the event index pages). These links only show to members when they are logged in

If you have any concerns or requests about any forum post (or any other content) and wish to inform the site mod team of them

The best method is to use the 'flag this post' feature

The link can be found as per below on every forum post via the three dots .... and is shown below (see red arrow)

Once flagged ALL mod team staff are informed and so any action (if needed) should then follow asp

Please use this rather than send pms to mods or post on the topic, or the 'contact us' feature etc

How do I view Local Soul Events in the guide?

A new 'local soul' guide has just been opened!

On the main event page just hit the 'Local' link and you will be taken to the 'local soul' guide

Note its currently members only so you do need to be logged in.

The guide will list weekly, monthly, day and stream feeds of events close to your chosen account location

It has a 40 mile default range (as the crow flys) but you can change this to your own choice to suit your location/needs

Links on the main local guide index page will take and allow you to increase or decrease the default and also to change your account location marker

Guide to using the activity /new content feature

The activity stream features allows you to run various 'custom' activity streams as well as the generic site 'New Content' feature

A brief guide follows below

To add your own custom stream -(eg choose what shows in your activity feed)

click the 'Start New Stream' link and follow the process

Note you can select the cog icon at the side of any content type to select specific items under that content type. Such as a specific forum.

on mobile/tablet screens - hit the hamburger menu - then choose the activity>start new stream link

once created the stream will show on the main menu as per the image below (top red arrow)

you can then

1. Make any stream default

hit the TICK icon next to the streams title (see image below)

2. Edit any stream and save as a new stream

hit the PENCIL icon next to the streams title (see image below)

3 Delete any custom stream

hit the TRASH icon next to the streams title (see image below)

After hitting the TICK icon your activity stream will show as per below

How do I mark all post read on a mobile/tablet?

if you have problems with 'new content' linking to old comments

you may need to 'mark all posts read'

on desktop pc it's easily found - its the 'arrow' next to the 'new content' link

however on a phone/tablet its a bit harder

you need to hit the hamburger menu

then as per the image below

hit the 'tick'

that will lead to all content being marked read and hopefully kick you 'new content' stream back up to speed

Members can lock/close a topic via the 'lock' option via the 'moderation actions' link/menu that shows to the topic starter

It is expected that when they do close a topic to avoid any misunderstandings and out of respect to members who may have contributed, members do post up that they have closed it and also the reason/s why closed/locked

Managing Your Messages

Sending messages between members in Soul Source is a simple but powerful tool that you can use to communicate with other members (or they can communicate with each other) away from your community.

When receiving a message, you will see a number appear next to your inbox icon showing the number of unread messages that you have. This would be similar to the images below.

Sending/Receiving

Clicking on the notification icon will show you the messages you have received. You can click on these to view any of the message or visit your inbox. You will see that you can also compose a new message from the same dropdown menu if you wish to do so.

Composing a message is very similar to composing a topic on the site. You can send messages to multiple recipients by typing their names within the "To" box. This field will suggest names by filtering through the member list as you type.

Managing Your Messages
When entering your inbox you will be presented with a screen similar to the below. From here you can search you messages, click on them to view, reply to your messages, filter and more.

Clicking on the button in the top right will allow you to add folders to organise your messages. Clicking on this button will present you with a text box in which to enter a new folder name. You can move messages to another folder using the button in the top right of any message.

1 When adding or editing an event you need to find the 'location' section as below

Tap the 'Current Country ' box and the below will show

Fill out the fields making use you do fill in the town/city and postcode

Use venue info direct from Google

Our event venue map uses google maps to display your venue location, so you do need to match your venue info to what goggle uses

Do not use 'venue titles' such as

'Nottingham Northern Soul and Motown @ The Nags'

Google hasn't a clue where or what that venue is , so that title will send it off looking (and then showing) for something else straight away

You need to use the actual venue name (the real world name of the venue) not one that you have made up

The Nags Head

Where it says address you need to enter the street name and number

1 Station Rd

then if needed you can 'hit' the + icon and enter more address lines if needed

Need to add the proper town/city name as per Google

Don't bother to add regions

Add postcode as per Google

and that's it

Once the event is save in theory google should now find and show the correct venue address, sometime it may not, if you need any assistance please flag the event

To try and assist in keeping things both enjoyable and worthwhile, there are several forums set up to help the discussion flow, with each one having a broad but distinct focus/range.

The scope of each forum follows below

All About the SOUL - aimed at general talk about current soul music related topics.
Look at Your box - more for the 'collector', with hardcore vinyl and artist info being the main thrust, value, original or boot also most welcome
Soul Media - forum for talk about soul podcasts, audio, video, radio
Site Support - the place for all talk about the actual site itself. If have any support questions, concerns, suggestions, views etc about Soul Source be it features, team, moderation, members or whatever then this is the place to post them.

Comments - please use the comments section of each event entry for comments before and after each event

Reviews - Once the event has finished a review section will show on the event page. Please post all events reviews via this feature.
You can also rate the actual event via a 5* star system, plus if reading the reviews you can also rate the reviews 'helpful' as well.

Major Event news - there is a front page news feature set up for worthwhile and informative news, please see the news feature faq/help section for best use of this feature.

New / Articles Feature Guidelines as at 28 Feb 2022

Please follow these guidelines when submitting News/Articles etc to Soul Source

1. Please ensure content is worthwhile, informative and enjoyable and fits in with the Soul Source thrust.

2. News - Fresh and unique news - ideally the submitter will add a personal aspect that will lift the item.

3. Articles - again need to be fairly unique - if from other sources, please ensure that you do have clearance

4. Fonts - Please do not use any fonts, emoticons or other forum type tools - just use plain text, normal case and size

5. Reviews/lookbacks - worthwhile unique reviews on releases be it vinyl, cd, dvds etc and event lookbacks are more than welcome

Event Related News

Unfortunately we can not feature all event news, as the amount would quickly swamp this feature. (Note that you can use the event guide comments or edit your original event guide post to pass on event related news)

Please only submit news on major national events which are one offs eg special national one off type events.

In order to try and offer all members equal and fair billing of items and to try and ensure that the sections work to the best effect we do have guidelines that all members are expected to read and follow

General Soul Markt Guidelines

TOPIC TITLES - Give the user an idea of what's on offer. A solid title may attract more viewers and hopefully sales!
NO TRADING OF RECENT BOOTLEG/PIRATED OR ILLEGAL MATERIAL - See site wide guidelines. Any such items/topics may be removed without discussion.
LEAVE FEEDBACK - Once sold please use the feedback feature for all completed sales/purchases - link to feedback

COMMENTING ON SALES TOPICS

Please do not comment on the merits/prices etc of Sale Forum items. This can have a negative effect on the sale and can affect the listings of other members sales.
The finer details of the deal should be done via the site PM (personal message) system. Use PMs for personal information, chat or off-topic chat. Any comments deemed to be in violation may be removed without discussion.

SALES POST MUST INCLUDE TEXT BASED INFO - At the very least the post should include, the item title, the condition and the price of each item in an EASY TO READ TEXT format.
SALES TOPICS ARE LIMITED TO TWO TOPICS in a 24 hour period per member
NO REPOSTING OF SALE ITEMS WITHIN 3 DAYS, THEN 7 DAYS FOR FURTHER REPOSTS.
NO UNNECESSARY SPLITTING OF SALES POSTS - Please only use one topic where applicable. When deemed unnecessary, topics may be merged. Formatting and spacing can be used to draw attention to items of special interest.

Post sales lists up in text format only (not as an attachment/file). Non-members cannot download files/attachments. We want Soul Source to be as user friendly as possible and formatting on attachments or files can make it difficult for mobile users.

WHEN SOLD USE THE SOLD ITEM FEATURE

Use the 'show 'SOLD' feature if wish or edit the title, but you must leave the sales info post intact, if there are any later issues/disputes or such regarding the sales process it will be hard to deal with if there is no record of the actual sale details.

Comments in the Wants Forum are less restricted due to the nature of the forum
Where replies are received via PMs (personal messages) please reply to all members who have responded to your request. Negative Feedback may follow if no replies are made.

All mint members are requested to limit their eBay sale advert posts in the Soul Website Forum (Mint Members Only) to a simple 'announce and ending'. eg. one post when first listing sales on eBay and if needed one comment when ending. That should allow you to inform other members of your sales without having a negative effect on other members sales posts.

SALES DISPUTES

Disputes:
The site considers all sales between members as private matters and it is up to the members involved to amicably resolve any issues. The site cannot act as final arbiter in disputes but can only suggest resolutions. There is always the 'Flag This Post' feature should you wish to bring it to the attention of the site if there are fears of fraudulent dealings.

Actions:
Sanctions available to the site in the event of ignoring warnings or persistent rule breaking can include removing adverts and if felt needed withdrawal of use of site features as per site terms of use.

Content Layout

Soul Source is viewed on many different devices, pcs, phones, tablets. Use of over/under sized text can make the content hard to read on some devices and may also raise accessibility issues.

Normal text size setting and normal case (no caps lock) should be used wherever possible.

No full 3rd party Articles without permission

Please do not post complete third-party articles from other websites/magazine onto Soul Source (unless you get permission of the website/author first)

To inform members about a third-party article that may be of interest, you can post a title and a brief clip highlighting the content along with a link to the full article. Doing this avoids any potential copyright issues

Moderation Comments

Please do not discuss moderation on the topic as it can disrupt the discussion flow. Use the Freebasing forum.

Due to copyright issues, we cannot allow the upload of sound files (unless you do have permission to share from the record label). Audio links/embeds from legal sources are permitted

How do I clear the text editors content?

Our text editor has what can be a very useful feature - autosaves your content, however this can be a pain if you are not aware of how to get rid of it

At the bottom of the text editor box there should be a link that says something like 'clear previous content'

If not try right clicking with your mouse in the editor and choose to select all then press delete ?

This application allows members to leave feedback for each other on forum transactions.

Members can leave positive, negative, or neutral feedback.

Integrates with the sites notification system and also displays feedback information in member profiles

All members using the site sales features are encouraged to use the feedback feature and give members their credit where and when due

Go to the advert topic from which the item was purchased. At the bottom of the ad you will see along the orange line the link
'FEEDBACK HIT NOW TO LEAVE SALES FEEDBACK!' (see image below)

Clicking on this link will then take you to the feedback page to be completed. Self-explanatory for the most part.

The TOPIC section should now be automatically filled if using the 'orange' link

Go to either the member's profile page or the FEEDBACK section.

Click on the FEEDBACK TAB or ADD FEEDBACK link and follow same procedure as above.

just quick usability hint that may help you when you are after getting a members notice

if you type @ followed by the members user name - it should then embed like the below

@source team

when you post the member should then get a 'site notification' sent to him via pm or email that you have 'mentioned' him and a link to the post

give it a try

select/tap the correct name and the system will enter the tag as below

you can then continue to type and post your content as normal

When logged in and viewing your post, the three dots .... link should show at the top of your post in the right corner

Embedding Youtube Videos in Content

Soul Source automatically embeds youtube videos into a content post

To do this you do need to know how to 'copy and paste' on your device (phone/pc)

To embed a youtube video you need to do the following

Get the url of the video clip you want to embed

Go to the youtube video page
Hit the 'share' link on the page
Copy the share url (see the image below - note -can use the 'copy' link)

Paste the url directly into the text editor on soul source

the link will show as below

then will automatically embed the link to the embedded video as below

Add any text to the post
Click Save

The topic will now be posted complete with the embedded video - see comments below for example

To embed Mixcloud podcasts/shows you just need to paste the bare link and the site system should then automatically take care of everything else

When uploading an image to the gallery it can be useful to give the image a title

for example for a flyer

The title Top Soul Event in Soulsville om May 2022 may work better than say 319C38FE-4B6D-480F-96BE-DECCBD78C048.jpeg

Step to give the gallery image a title

Once uploaded the image, before clicking the 'Submit All Images' button

All you need to do is click the image you wish to name and the following window will show

Then just enter your title and tap the 'save details' button and then tap the 'Submit All Images' button when finished uploading and naming all images

If you wish to tag your topic as sold

Then you can do it by just hitting the 'add tag +' button that shows under your title when logged in

Then select 'sold' then choose 'sold' as the prefix

Tap 'save' and all done ... 5 seconds
