  7. Haven't seen mention on here but have just seen on a music site the sad passing at 89 Sugar Pie DeSanto on the 20th Dec. Soulful Dress was a must have in my group of friends when I first started collecting.

  16. Sad news Phil Shields long term member of Soul Source has passed away. His family were with him and he went peacefully. Phil had a great taste in music and was a resident DJ here at the Benn Hall Rugby allnighter. Rest in peace Phil.

  19. Blackpool Mecca was essentially a Saturday Night not an Allnighter. Regulars will have a better recollection as I only went twice in the evening and once to an afternoon. Ascending the escalator was an experience itself, checking your tie was straight, searched by the bouncers then into the Highland Room. The Mecca finished at 2.00 pm but I stand to be corrected on this. Many at the Mecca then drove to Wigan which was weird as you were seeing the same people again but in a much larger crowd. Don’t allow yourself to be taken in by the Joe 90 stuff - there were always odd-ball tunes given the rare outing as DJ’s pioneered - even towards the end, the high quality tunes outnumbered the poppy-disco things.

  21. Mal, we were unaware of parties when Cats closed at 2am Torch, between 1970 and 1973 I attended Twisted Wheel (10 times), Blackpool Mecca, Up The Junction, Golden Torch, Blackpool Casino club, Mr Smiths Manchester, Rowntrees Sound in Manchester. Like John Smith I had free travel on the railway which explains my frequent visits to the North of England. When I went to Cats, the place was heaving and I remember seeing many Wheel regulars there because the latter had closed a few months earlier. Perhaps that explains me remembering it closed at 2am that night. Memory is fading now, so could be wrong. There was an image on a cd of two guys looking at records on a BR trolley. That always reminds me of Wolverhampton station for some reason. Special memories.

I took it backstage got it signed with a kiss off Martha absolutely buzzing what a night amazing. Ducker is this the when you broke your arm outside? All the best T

  37. As far as I can remember the labels with blue and brown bits around the centre hole are west coast copies. Plain white labels are east coast, most being issues and only a promo if it says so on the label.

  38. I spoke to Maura Jackson earlier in the year, her husband Maurice died years ago, a lovely lady. I asked her about Monique (Greene) she told me Monique did 3 releases then left for California shortly afterwards. I asked and sent recordings of the Topper stuff and just as Dave Hamilton had said to me personally in 1990 Maura had no idea of the connection. Probing further I asked if there was any tapes within the family from the older days, sadly not. When Maura relocated from one part of Chicago to the present locacation everything was dumped. Further asking for vinyl she said some guy bought all the stock as he wanted to make ash trays out of them. She said they never made a penny out of music, laughing she said ''we were too nice'' how sweet and how sad is that

  39. And here is the chart from the very first issue of Home of the Blues (Blues and Soul's predecessor) from May 1966, presumably typed by John E. Abbey. Some great tunes.

  40. I had no idea that it was opened in 1968. Was Carl Dene playing rare soul then? In my opinion it was second only to the Twisted Wheel. Loved their adverts in Blues and Soul. The only thing about the Catacombs was it closed at 2am which was terrible for us travelling back to Glasgow from Wolverhampton! https://bethanackerley.com/2019/01/14/the-death-of-the-cats-northern-soul-wolverhampton-catacombs/
