Adapt, evolve and participate? Why when we already have Ray Pollard. Some band wagon jumper ain’t going to better Ray. Northern Soul doesn’t need emulating or copying, it doesn’t need changing. What is already there is one reason why it has endured for so long. Always puzzles me why some join a scene and immediately want to change it, therein lies the problem and why it gets so many backs up. Just enjoy it as it is, it doesn’t need to change or copying, especially by a bunch of of soulless brit singers.28 points

Happy Christmas to everyone associated with Soul Source. Special thanks to Mike for another soulful year of the site, including the moderators, and of course to all of my friends who contribute. (Everyone). Lets hope it's peaceful and that everyone stays safe. Peter21 points

Not for me. Black America left us a huge legacy of great soul music that is far from fully discovered even now. The original talents came up with original works. AI would just be basing itself on these recordings and adding nothing new to them19 points

I received an unsolicited message from one of the scenes nicest guys and a legend in my eyes, which is better than any review I could pen myself (thank you Sir Ste Smith it means a lot to the team): Ashton under Lyne Ukraine club. Light touch paper stand back and whoosh. Having become a must not miss night for me , it never ceases to amaze me when you get back home and think OMG how good was tonight and how are they going to match it next time out. Impossible you think then more often than not it just kind of gets better ( don't know if the soul fairies sprinkle you with magic dust as you walk in or what but something magical happens ) and last night was as good as it gets and what a way to see out 2024. Everyone involved with the club should take a bow. You have something very very special. Thank you11 points

This record has nothing to do with the progression or keeping the music alive, it is a attempt to make money on the back of a Northern classic and an attempt to get people on here to get the record on to the BBC 2 playlist.11 points

Well we've had some Amazing nights this year at Ashton Ukrainian Club, what a way to round off an unbelievable year!! So many highlights to look back on! The room quickly filled up, within half an hour, every table in the main room was taken, thanks so much from everyone at Team Ukrainian for making this event what it is, an open minded audience, who show their appreciation on the dance floor!! Lots of new faces last night and great to see the Shropshire Posse in full effect! Phil Dunn played an accomplished opening set to set the mood for the night!! Natalie Nicholls followed with a power house selection all aimed firmly at the dance floor(how it should be) It was a pleasure for me to follow on, as Darren Carroll said a good old mix up of styles and tempos, I'll post a playlist later!! Dean Anderson followed Soul Fay Bo Fowler "upper hand" Hayes Cotton "Black Wings" alternate take, loved it!! December 24 Ashton Video.mp4 Alan Jenkins followed and WOW!! mind blowing selection of Rare Soul Two+Two, Eddie Billups, Del Tours and many many more. The dance floor loved it, see attached video!! We finished the night with a double deck session from Chris Churm + Simon Ingham to end the night in fine style Keith + Billie "tastes sour" Paris, Ty Karim "you really made it good" Ralph Graham "she just sits there" the icing on the cake!!! We're already planning for 2025 watch this space!! Once again thanks so much to our loyal supporters, have a great Christmas and we'll catch you in the New Year!! PS thanks to our amazing bar staff and for Rowena Ribena Morgan arranging a well deserved collection!! Team Ukrainian !!10 points

We've had quite a few over the years including quite a few old Black Echoes. I had a few Black Echoes which I gave to Chalky, and he did all the work in scanning and uploading them, along with many others. Chalky spends a fair bit of time sharing stuff like this, along with lots of old cassette tapes which he digitalises and then uploads on different social media platforms. He always does it without any fuss and all for the love of the scene. Well done, and thanks to Karl. Peter10 points

It's hardly keeping the music relevant it is taking Northern Soul into tribute type shows territory. I will stick with the real deal.9 points

Off all the attempted revivals and attempts to attract new comers this has to be the most commercialised and marketed era yet. It’s non stop and coming from a lot of directions. Just typifies the social media world we now live in. please let it stop….9 points

A few years ago, while working with MD Records and conducting Pioneer Studio research, I made a serious effort to delve into "Jimmy Mack" and "In The Pocket Music." The "In The Pocket" team, comprising Mike Valvano, Marty Coleman, and Cholly Bassoline, who frequently used Pioneer Studio for their demos, and Mike Valvano would use their piano. Of this songwriting trio, only Cholly Bassoline is still alive. He later became the manager of Parliament-Funkadelic, though he maintains a low profile and is only occasionally active on Facebook. I managed to get in touch with a female friend of his who worked with him in 2021 at a furniture store in Phillipsburg, NJ. (Yes, he’s still working!) She kindly passed along some messages to Cholly, but unfortunately, he wasn’t able to shed any light on Jimmy Mack’s real identity. Cholly did share some insights about his late colleagues. He said how Marty Coleman tragically died after being hit by a car on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, and how Mike Valvano passed away from a heart attack. He also mentioned that the Palmer Label was owned by Arc-Jay Kay Record Distributors, which was run by John Kaplan. According to his friend, Cholly now lives "under the radar" and doesn’t have much more to share on the subject, nor does he remember the real identity of "Jimmy Mack"...9 points

Ashton Ukrainian club; it doesn’t’ take much to go from a guaranteed good night to a fabulous night at this magical venue. Last night, the stars aligned, and the soul gods were smiling, and a terrific night ensued. We arrived early to ensure we got a seat, just as well since the venue filled up quickly. Phil Dunn doing sterling job warming up the crowd with some familiar sounds, Deana Barnes and Channel 3, completing an accomplished set to the magic that is Terry Callier. Natalie Nicholls graced the decks next, with set designed to keep the dance floor happy. Starting with the Tempests, followed by Barbara Lynn ‘I’m a Good Woman’ Garnett Mimms, Sam fletcher and Sam Dees. Mick Howard next, always has a top mix of great tunes, including, jimmy Seals, George Kirby and The Innersection ‘Let me Love You ‘. And a favourite dancer by the brilliant Hesitations ‘That’s what Love is” The legendary Dean Anderson followed with an eclectic mix of lesser played tunes. The Fabulous Peps 'Gypsy Woman', the best version for me. The Venturas, Keith and Billie’s take on ‘Taste Sour Don’t it’. I’m sure I heard an instrumental version of Jean Wells ‘With My Love and What You’ve got’ whilst at the bar, I would have liked to have danced to that. Completing the set with a lesser-known tune from The T.S.U Toronados ‘Only Inside’. Lost for words on Alan Jenkins, don’t think I’ve heard so many big tunes in one set. I kept looking around expecting to see Securicor waiting in the wings to take his record box back to the van. He kicked off with the Tamangoes, followed by William Powell, Hamilton Movement, Del-Larks, Lester Tipton and Don Gardner to name a few. Brand New Faces got a particularly good reception on the dance floor, I’m sure some got up thinking it was going to be Jimmy Burns Chris and Simon double decked for the final hour. Simon kicking of with a trio of The Temptations tracks. Followed by some big crowd pleasers including Troy Dodds, Paris, Walter and Admerations and the Volumes ‘Ain’t Gonna Give You up’. A great set and fabulous evening, ending with Chris playing Ralph Graham. Thanks to Chris and team for a great year at the Ukrainian club. A special shout out to the bar staff. This night felt like Santa had arrived with all the best tunes, ensuring we all went home smiling and with fond memories. Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year.8 points

Phil If the goal is to get the single played on the BBC Radio 2, then your best bet is for the band to come out as LGBT. If that's a no, then it still has a better chance of getting played on the Beeb than the other new cover version that's just been released, this is more in tune with most of the age group on this forum. Great lyrics.8 points

Following up on this, Marlin McNicohols managed to get in touch with Cholly Bassoline last night for Me. He said the same thing: he doesn’t remember who “Jimmy Mack” was. He only shared what we already know, explaining that the name "Jimmy Mack" was an alias stage name. The name was took from the popularity of the Martha Reeves track at the time and was chosen for marketing purposes in hope to help sales. It’s likely that the recording artist’s real name has no connection to a “Jimmy” or “James” to make things even more difficult. What did catch my interest, though, is that The Debonaires provided the backing vocals on "My World Is On Fire", which was recorded at United Sound Studio during the summer of 1967, when the Detroit riots were also happening. I followed up with Elsie Gray to see if she remembered anything about the session. She confirmed that she remembers the recording well, but unfortunately, she doesn’t know the real identity of “Jimmy Mack” either. Cholly worked with a man named James Cheers around that time - who also recorded with Bobby Franklin at Pioneer Recording Studio (Late 60s) - but Elsie confirmed it wasn’t him—James was somebody who she knew well. She also added that the other backing singers on that session were Joyce Vincent and Dorothy Garland, and she’s now planning to ask them if they can provide any additional information. Sadly, so much time has passed and the key people involved - Mike Valvano and Marty Coleman - are no longer with us. I did manage to locate Marty Coleman’s sister to ask her about it on the off chance she might remember, though I doubt she knows anything specific about the song. Marty had some personal struggles later in life. I also reached out to Ian Levine, thinking he might know something since he worked with Mike Valvano on the Motorcity Project. However, he said the topic never came up when he met and worked with Mike. Like September Jones, it's another mystery.8 points

Wow, wow, wow. What a night at Ashton! Just when you don't think it couldn't get any better it did. I can't get bored at Ashton because there is always an education to be had. There is an atmosphere there that you can't bottle or get anywhere else IMHO. One of the best points is that none of the DJs or those that run it have an ego, they know it's about the wooden square thing in front of them. Well-done to all those who run it, great year with a crescendo in December. See you next year.7 points

I think the desperation to be 18 and have access to the adult world of pubs and clubs will happen forever with all generations. Sneaking in underage has some kudos to share stories with your mates. Exactly Its an embarrassment to all that’s good about rare soul and the rare soul scene.7 points

Over £1000 is a high price for a rare but inferior version of "The Same Old Thing" by The Olympics. This version sounds duller, and has less of an exciting production, than the standard released classic to me. I suppose it's something different to play!7 points

Where do you begin ? I can hand on heart say I've never had a bad night at Ashton. Great venue great music but most of all the amount of real proper like minded folk be treat to the records played was unreal. Top night and good to catch up with a few old mate and new ones. Best club for me in the North of England that without a bought. I special as for the staff they are unreal and volunteers to stand serving us. The amount of djs and quality has been 1st class hats off to them all bring on the new year6 points

You’ve been going since 1974 and it seems you still don’t get it? Commercialisation, the trivialisation and imitation has always been frowned upon. I know loads under 60, I’ve nearly 2 years to go before I hit 60, they’ve all embraced the scene for what it is, all the records were new ay one time and never did anyone feel it had to evolve. The youngsters seem to be doing a good job at several clubs without resorting to tribute acts etc. the tribute acts are aimed at a completely different audience, the kind of people I went to nighters to get away from. And if you think royalties are getting paid 100% then you need to give your head a wobble.6 points

Just for the Record (yes i will take that as a pun Ha Ha) It was far better than lot of Pop Drivel that was played on the Scene over the years and judging by that from comments on the thread so far, Dave Thorley Played it on the Dodgy Acetate,Chalky and myself were playing it off the LP and like me must have had many people up to the Turntables to see what was being played, Rob5airborne was Chasing it to find out it's identity and been Bugging him for over 30 years Rated it as a 'Absolutely Blinding Track' Blackpoolsoul has been trying to gleam some information on Allan Scott and seems there is just nothing out there about him, but thanks for all your efforts **So yes, for a 'Quality Pop Record' it certainly got the Juices Flowing Back Then & Now It Would Seem**5 points

I don’t think a DJ of the calibre and integrity of Colin Curtis would be involved in the project (which he is) if the band didn’t in someway have some authenticity. If you listen to the original version and this one I find them very similar to be honest and if we keep knocking Young people who are trying to emulate a music genre their parents were into then, let’s face it, when all of us 60+ year-olds have died then I’m afraid the scene dies with us!!5 points

Why doesn't someone ask Richard why he thinks they are the same person. Who told him that, or where did he read it. I remember several rumours that got around to so many people that many people believed that they must have been true. But they could have ALL originated with a couple collectors surmising (guessing) that from a falsely-interpreted clue, or a coincidence that made it seem unlikely to not be true - such as 4 or 5 clues lining up almost perfectly. Think of the case of the 2 Frank Wilsons both working for Motown at the same time with both having been working in L.A. and starting their songwriting and producing careers there. I can't count how many times we've asked Detroiters who were active participants in the music industry during the '60s about obscure artists, and they even remember working on the recording session in question, and still didn't remember, or ever even know the artist's real name or the names of individual group members, etc. It's always great when many, many years after the first time searching for the answers to similar questions, one of us actually finds irrefutable documentation of the true answer. Of course, the further in years that we move away from those times, the fewer of these late true answers will be coming forth. Many of these questions will never be answered. I've forgotten a LOT myself, that I've never written down.5 points
